Bonteheuwel is a disadvantaged area with high rates of crime and unemployment. The goal of the Art in Schools Initiative is to increase student learning outcomes, academic involvement and self-esteem through creative thinking, creating art interventions that complement and integrate with their academic curriculum. Co-wrote successful grant application to the 4C’s Foundation to fund a mural camp in which we led a group of elementary and high school students in the planning and executing of a mural on the exterior of the Historic Farmer’s Market. Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Summer Mural Arts Program, Halifax, NS. July 2011. Designed and co-taught (with artist Shawn Bullen) this summer camp involving classes of five to twelve year olds in painting projects, museum exploration at the AGNS, and the production of a movable mural. Inglis Elementary Art Class and Afterschool Mural Program, Halifax, NS. March 2010 – June 2011. Volunteer assistant art teacher during the school day and co-leader of the 4C’s Foundation grant-funded afterschool mural painting program (January 2011-June 2011) wherein we worked with a large group of fifth graders to design and paint the interior as well as part of the exterior of their school while discussing art, community, geography and cultural diversity. Historic Farmer’s Market, Halifax, NS. Interior Murals: Spring/Summer 2011, Art Table: Fall 2010-2011. Collaborated with two other artists to paint interior mural portraits of regular Farmer’s Market performers as part of an initiative to bring business to local vendors.
